Normandy & D-Day Beaches

Tournesol Travel specializes in private, customized travel experiences based on the individual interests, pace and schedule of our customers. Below an example of such an itinerary.

Day 1 | Bayeux, La Roche-Guyon & Giverny

Meet your driver and guide at the airport or your hotel and set off for Bayeux. En route we proposed two optional sightseeing stops. First option is La Roche-Guyon with a visit to the eponymous chateau that served as headquarters for Rommel at the end of World War II during the battle of Normandy. Second option: continue on to the charming village of Giverny to see the house, studio, and gardens of the master Impressionist Claude Monet, including the iconic water lily pond and the green Japanese footbridge.

Upon arriving in Bayeux, spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the hotel facilities, or (option included in price): introduction to the historic city with a leisurely guided walking tour, visiting the Cathedral and the museum that houses the iconic Bayeux Tapestry and its vivid depiction of the Battle of Hastings.

Day 2 | d-day Beaches, monuments & Museums

In the company of your bilingual guide, a D-Day historian, set off on the first day of an emotional two-day journey as you visit the key sites, beaches, monuments and museums related to the Normandy Invasion.

Visit the beaches and the bunkers of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach where the landings took place, as well as Sainte-Mère-Église, a small village occupied by the American troops and one of the first French towns liberated in the invasion.

Stop at the Pointe-du-Hoc battlefield to appreciate the magnitude of the obstacles faced by the Allied forces. Witness the sacrifice of these brave troops as you visit the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer as well as the Arromanches D-Day Museum, built in commemoration of the Normandy Campaign.

Your two-day program will also include visits to Pegasus Bridge and its related museum, Saint-Lô, and other sites related to the Second World War.

Day 3 | d-day Beaches, monuments & Museums

Meet your guide and driver in the reception area of your hotel for your second day of visits to key D-Day sites, museums, and monuments, following the itinerary (which will respect your required pace) recommended by your expert guide during your two-day tour.

Day 4 | Mont St Michel, Bayeux & Granville

In the company of your guide, begin your day with a private tour of the extraordinary medieval town of Mont St Michel. Crowned by its legendary Abbey church, it was for centuries a place of Christian pilgrimage and later an important center of learning.

Return towards Bayeux, with an option to stop and visit the Musée Christian Dior in Granville. Visit the Villa Les Rhumbs, the famous couturier's childhood home which now houses a collection of his legendary designs, as well as the beautiful gardens surrounding the villa.

Alternatively, return to Bayeux to visit the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux (if you did not visit it upon your arrival).

If time allows, and you have not already done so, visit the Cathédrale de Bayeux, the impressive Norman-Romanesque Roman Catholic cathedral and the former home of the Bayeux Tapestry, and/or the Botanical Garden, a remarkable 19th-century landscaped park.

Day 5 | A day along the Coastline

While Normandy is perhaps best known for its D-Day beaches and medieval history, it also holds the distinction of being the birthplace of Impressionism.

In the company of your guide, explore this fascinating artistic and cultural aspect of the region, tracing the movement along the coastline from Giverny to Rouen, from Étretat and Le Havre to Deauville, and Honfleur.

You may prefer to spend the whole day re-discovering Honfleur with your family and guide.

Day 6 | Paris or Giverny

Private driver guide back to Paris, with an option to stop for a visit to Giverny (if you did not visit on your arrival).
