Off the Beaten Path Experience #5

Gorges du Verdon and Chateau de Trigance

Known as the Grand Canyon of France, nestled in the Alpes de Haute Provence, this natural wonder has been the backdrop of many a French adventure film.

Located 90 miles from Nice, this is a day trip that would punctuate your stay on the French Riviera. Besides enjoying the breathtaking views, you can also kayak, canoe, hike and swim in the crystal clear, refreshingly chilly water of the Lac de Sainte Croix.

You may opt for a longer stay and spend a night or two at the spectacular Chateau de Trigance, 10 minutes from the Gorges. We have fond memories of celebrating our first wedding anniversary in this medieval fortress which is also worthy of a movie setting. It is now a hotel featuring 8 guest rooms each decorated with a Three Musketeers look, complete with four-poster beds in every room; very romantic! Enjoy evening cocktails on the terrace atop the ramparts with an incredible 360-degree view of the Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon, followed by dinner in the vaulted dining room.

On your way back to Nice, take a detour via Moustier Sainte Marie. Nestled in between two imposing cliffs this is truly one of the most incredible villages in all of France.
