A BUBBLY GETAWAY 90 MINUTES FROM PARIS

Off the Beaten Path Experience #4

A DAY IN EPERNAY

Champagne, the nectar of life!  When I think of France, those eponymous bubbles will always pop into my head.

Take a day (and perhaps an overnight too) and spend it discovering Épernay, home to one of France’s top ten exports: champagne!  Just a 90 minute ride by train from Paris and you will find yourself in the heart of this picturesque town with its stunning architecture, surrounded by magnificent vineyards and of course the opportunity to spend a leisurely afternoon visiting the famed champagne houses to sample those bubbles first hand!

No visit to Épernay would be complete without a stroll along the revered Avenue de Champagne. This pedestrian-friendly boulevard takes you past some of the best champagne houses in town, all occupying stunning mansions and many with delightful gardens to enjoy.  Some of the most famous labels, including Moët et Chandon, Laurent Perrier and Lanson have their headquarters here.

As well as the more renowned houses, don’t miss out on the smaller ones that offer a warm welcome and an opportunity to sample their sparkling wares.

Champagne de Venoge. The old stables, which are located in the front garden, have been converted into a superb bar and wine shop. If Épernay has stolen your heart, you may opt to spend the night; luxury overnight accommodation is available here. The overnight suites are truly stunning and well worth indulging yourself.

You could also spend the night at another favorite of ours: Maison Guy Charbaut. Their champagne is a delight, and their welcome is warm and inviting.
